The Idea

At St. Martin’s School in Kibera, the needs are real and urgent. Our charity exists to support the incredible work already happening on the ground and to help the school grow, improve, and keep its doors open to every child who needs it.

The idea was born when Yvonne Wende, the founder of the Berlin Cosmopolitan School, visited Cecilia in Kibera in January 2025 to get to know her and her work. Both women had established schools 20 years ago, one in Berlin-Mitte, the other in Africa’s largest slum. Two places that could hardly be more different, and yet their dialogue revealed striking parallels.

The wish to support Cecilia in her mission quickly emerged. She receives little outside help, and none from the government. Life in the slum is marked by a strong sense of community, where people share what they can, even though, all too often, there is nothing to share.

Out of this encounter, we founded Kinderhilfe weltweit (Children’s Aid Worldwide) and made St. Martin’s School our first project. But we don’t want to stop there. Our vision is to grow and support as many children as possible. For us, the first step begins in Kibera.

At the same time, we have connected with a similar educational initiative in India, which offers the poorest children a chance at a better future. We will continue to share updates here and are deeply grateful for the support we receive support that we are committed to passing on.

What We Fund — And Why It Matters

  • Classrooms & Science Lab

The school is growing, but space is tight. We’re raising funds to build two new classrooms and a basic science lab so students can get the practical, hands-on learning they need to thrive in STEM subjects. Without a lab, they’re at a huge disadvantage compared to students in better-funded schools.

  • Technology & Digital Access

Students at St. Martin’s currently have little to no access to computers or reliable internet. We aim to equip the school with basic IT infrastructure so children can build digital skills, do research, and access modern learning tools.

  • Desks & Textbooks

With over 270 children enrolled, the school urgently needs more desks and learning materials. Many students currently share seats or work without proper textbooks, which makes focused learning nearly impossible.

  • School Meals

For many children, the lunch served at school is the only proper meal of the day. The feeding program helps reduce malnutrition, boosts attendance, and keeps students energized to learn — but funding it is a constant challenge.

  • Sponsor a Child (Long Distance Adoption)

Through St. Martin’s Long Distance Adoption Program, donors can sponsor a child’s education and well-being. Sponsorships help cover school fees, uniforms, supplies, and even basic support for families at home.

  • Basic Supplies

Many families in Kibera can’t afford essentials like sanitary pads, shoes, or school uniforms. A small donation can make a big difference in whether a child attends school confidently — or stays home out of shame.
